Established in 2001, the .NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domain names can be personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At the beginning, solely 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired 3rd-level domain names remained running.
